Jeffs rally to beat Bowdoin
The Amherst College football team rallied to score the winning touchdown with two minutes, 47 seconds to play and held on to defeat Bowdoin 13-12 Saturday at Pratt Field.
Alex Vetras (17-of-33, 168 yards) threw a 5-yard pass to Brandon Bullock for the winning score by the Jeffs (2-0, 2-0 New England Small College Athletic Conference).
Amherst safety Fred Argir then intercepted Polar Bears quarterback Oliver Kell on the first play of the next drive to preserve the victory.
Aaron Rauh gave the Jeffs a 6-0 lead with a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The extra-point try was blocked.
Bowdoin (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) was held to four field goals on seven trips into the red zone.
Amherst senior linebacker Mike Taylor was named NESCAC defensive co-player of the week after he led the Jeffs with 16 tackles, including seven solo, and one sack.
Femi Oyalowo was the leading runner for Amherst, with 41 yards on 11 carries.
Men's ice hockey
New Brunswick 3, UMass 2 (exhibition) - Casey Wellman and T.J. Syner scored for the Minutemen in the exhibition loss Saturday night at the Mullins Center practice rink.
Paul Dainton made 25 saves in goal for UMass which opens the regular season against Rensselaer at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Women's cross country
Amherst College won the Keene (N.H.) State College Invitational by placing five runners in the top 10 on the 5k course Saturday.
Jeffs senior Sophia Galleher finished first in 18:40.
Women's golf
Amherst College won the Middlebury (Vt.) Invitational by shooting a 643 during the weekend at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Williams was second with a 654, and Mount Holyoke finished third at 670.
Jeffs junior Hayley Milbourn won the individual title with a two-round score of 152.
