Midwest musician Peter Mulvey bicycles to gigs 1,000 miles away; Iron Horse on itinerary
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Musician Peter Mulvey doesn't need roadies, just an air pump and smooth pavement to reach his gigs.
The Milwaukee-based singer-songwriter is in the midst of an 1,100-mile bicycle tour that started in Michigan Sept. 9 and ends in Massachusetts Sept. 26. He's riding a recumbent bike to his 10 gigs along the way, including Sunday night's performance at Caffe Lena, a folk music landmark in Saratoga Springs.
Opening act Brianna Lane is also riding a bike for the tour, along with some supportive friends. They'll ride between 40 and 100 miles each day, with the musicians strapping their guitars to their bikes.
"The Long Haul Tour 2009" is Mulvey's third cycling-to-gigs trip. He says it's fun to bike to work, even if it is 1,000 miles away.
Mulvey, a frequent visitor over the years to the Iron Horse, is scheduled to end his trek with a show at the Northampton club on Saturday, Sept. 26.
