Follow Friday
Beginning this week, the Daily Hampshire Gazette is launching a new sports feature called Follow Friday.
Ten college and high school athletes from the Gazette's coverage area have agreed to participate by submitting short updates each week.
They will write about anything from their team to a class they are enjoying or a movie they saw.
Two will be selected as that week's featured athletes and their pictures and updates will be published in the Friday sports section. The remaining updates will be posted on the high school sports blog at www.gazettenet.com/blog/hs-sports.
This will be a fun and interesting way to keep in touch with area athletes at varying levels in many sports throughout the season.
The group is split evenly with five current college athletes who are all former area high school standouts. The other five now are high school varsity stars.
The college athletes are Eddie Jewel, a freshman football player at Monmouth University; Abby Majewski, a senior volleyball player at Providence College; Paul Norton, a senior cross country runner at Brandeis University; Danielle Parenteau, a junior soccer player at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts; and Nicholas Rouzier, a soccer player at Villanova University.
Rouzier, Jewel and Norton are all from Amherst and attended Amherst Regional. Jewel also was a student at Wilbraham & Monson Academy for two years.
Majewski is from Sunderland and graduated from Frontier Regional. Parenteau is a Hampshire Regional graduate from Southampton.
The high school athletes are Molly Brooks, a senior field hockey player for Northampton;, Sean Gaudette, a senior golfer at Hopkins Academy; Leah Haake, a senior cross country runner at Amherst Regional; James Mercer, a senior soccer player at South Hadley; and Steph Slysz, a senior field hockey player at Smith Academy.
More information on all 10 athletes is in their accompanying profiles.
