Steps to citizenship
NORTHAMPTON - In order to obtain citizenship, applicants must:
n Be at least 18 years old;
n Have been a lawful permanent resident (have a green card) for five years (or for three years if married to a U.S. citizen);
· Fill out an application that asks seven basic yes or no questions.
· Be able to speak, read and write English (waived for some people over age 50 or with physical or mental impairment);
n Be able to demonstrate knowledge of U.S. history and government;
n Be of good moral character. (A criminal check is conducted for all applicants. Prior to the ceremony today, officials will ascertain that applicants have not broken any laws in the time between taking the test and being sworn in.)
· Take an oath of allegiance to the U.S.
· Pay the application fee of $675, which includes $80 for the Department of Homeland Security.
People interested in becoming U.S. citizens can request forms from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service at 1-800-870-3676, pick them up at the Center for New Americans at 17 New South St., Northampton, or download forms at www.uscis.gov.
