Amherst bats fail in clutch
AMHERST - The Amherst Regional baseball team was silenced Monday.
Rey Guzman and John Sypek combined to two-hit the Hurricanes as Chicopee defeated Amherst 5-1 in the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament quarterfinal round.
"This was a tough game," Amherst junior Sean Cunningham said. "Their pitcher threw an outstanding game - we just didn't have our bats going. We were mentally prepared. We just didn't come through in the clutch situations."
Fifth-seeded Chicopee (15-7) will face No. 1 East Longmeadow (20-1) in the semifinal round at Szot Park at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Spartans defeated Holyoke 4-2 on Monday.
Amherst, the fourth seed, finished 14-8.
"We didn't hit," Amherst senior Fred Shepard said. "In the end that was it. We didn't hit."
Guzman no-hit Amherst through four innings and struck out 13. The senior threw a steady mix of fastballs and sliders.
Sypek relieved Guzman in the fifth with two on and no outs. The soft-tossing righty escaped the jam and finished the game for the save.
"Rey pitched a hell of a game," Vouros said. "That set the tone for them and they scratched across a couple runs early."
Chicopee quickly took momentum with two runs off Shepard in the first. Leadoff hitter Dan Asselin bounced a single over third baseman Matt Musante's head to start the game. A two-out throwing error by shortstop Dean Bonneau led to the second run.
Amherst attempted to answer. Evan Hazelett had a one-out walk and then stole second. A passed ball pushed Hazelett to third but Guzman fanned Kevin Ziomek and Shepard to end the threat.
It was the first of many times that the Hurricanes could not come through with a timely hit.
Amherst scored its lone run in the fourth without a hit. Shepard reached first on an error by second baseman John Espinosa, took second when Cunningham walked and eventually scored on a passed ball. Cunningham took third on a groundout but Bobby Carkhuff struck out to end the inning.
Amherst mounted a two-out rally in the fifth. Bonneau singled to right to end the no-hitter. Hazelett then reached on a dropped third strike. The Pacers got lucky and escaped the inning when catcher Ricci Sergienko attempted to pick off Bonneau at second and overthrew the bag. But Asselin fielded the ball in center and threw out Bonneau at third.
"That was tough," Vouros said. "That was an aggressive mistake, real close play. Trying to move both runners into scoring position at that time of the game wasn't necessarily a mental mistake. I thought it was an aggressive mistake."
In the sixth Guzman walked Ziomek and Shepard to start the inning and was replaced by Sypek. Cunningham then singled to load the bases. But Musante struck out and Derek Osborne hit a liner to Sypek, who made the catch and doubled Ziomek off third to end the inning.
Amherst hit three hard balls to the outfield in the seventh but went down in order to end the game.
"He was throwing knuckleballs, which we haven't seen all year," Shepard said. "It was slower than batting practice."
Shepard struck out eight and walked one over five innings. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs in the loss. Osborne pitched two perfect innings of relief and struck out one.
It was the final game for Hurricanes senior Chris Hicks, Ben Israel, David Marx, Shepard and Hazelett.
