Frontier one more away from tournament

The Frontier Regional baseball team won its third straight game and kept its postseason hopes alive with a 7-2 victory over Turners Falls Thursday in South Deerfield.

The Red Hawks (9-10, 7-9 Hampshire) need to beat Palmer (11-7) at 3:30 p.m. today in South Deerfield to earn a bid. Gary Grandonico (3-2) will pitch for Frontier.

The Red Hawks left 12 runners on base, including nine in scoring position, but Stephen Wojtowicz made those inconsequential. The senior pitcher scattered five hits and a walk and did not allow an earned run while striking out six to earn the win.

Freshman Pete Spencer led the Frontier offense with two hits, two walks, an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Grandonico added a hit, a run and a steal while driving in two.

Hampshire Regional 7, Wahconah 5 - The Red Raiders scored five runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead en route to the win in Dalton.

Hampshire (6-12) has won four of five since losing nine straight.

Matt Dziok struck out two, walked four and allowed three earned runs over six innings for the win.

Dziok (2-for-4) helped his own cause with two runs and two RBIs.

Alex Brunelle (3-for-4) and Mike Konarski (hit) each had an RBI and scored a run for the Red Raiders.

Granby 18, Pioneer Christian 1 - The Rams (15-4) hit four two-run home runs in the third inning as they cruised in a game shortened by the mercy-rule at home.

The second, fourth, sixth and eighth batters each went deep after the player ahead of them reached. Sean Sheridan (3-for-4, four RBIs) started the long ball assault, followed by Kraig Burke, who also went to right.

Jesse Cummings' homer went to center, and Jake Labonte (3-for-4, four RBI) hit his to right.

Granby closes its regular season at 3:30 p.m. today when it hosts Hopkins Academy.

Gateway Regional 4, Monson 3 - Mike Miller kept the Gators (11-8, 7-7 Bi-County) within striking distance and the offense did the job in the comeback win in Huntington.

After allowing three unearned runs on three errors in the second inning, Miller kept the Mustangs (11-9, 6-8) off the scoreboard and retired the last 16 batters he faced.

He needed just 82 pitches to earn the complete-game win on three hits and no walks while striking out four.

Gateway rallied with one run in the third and two more in the fourth. It finally took the lead when Korey Whitaker (2-for-3, two runs scored, RBI) and Tommy Ray (2-for-3, RBI) led off the sixth with back-to-back doubles.

Jeremy Tanguay and Gabe Craig each had two hits for the Gators.

Taconic 5, Belchertown 2 - The Braves (11-7) scored all five runs on two-out errors as the Orioles (11-9) finished the regular season with the loss at home.

Belchertown committed two-out, two-run errors in the first and fourth innings and a two-out, one-run error in the seventh.

Cory Menard (two hits) hit a solo homer and Bryan Eldridge stole home for the Orioles, who were 7-for-7 on steals. It was the second time this season Belchertown achieved the feat.

Dan Hodgen was the losing pitcher for the Orioles. He struck out three and allowed four hits in four innings.

Athol 7, Easthampton 5 - The Eagles (5-15, 2-14 Hampshire) finished their season with the loss at Booster Field.

Matt Gilbert (run) and Tim Cunningham (two runs, RBI) each went 2-for-4 while Jon Vershon was 1-for-2 for Easthampton.

Chicopee Comp 2, South Hadley 1 - The Tigers (8-12) saw their first winning streak of the season come to an end with the loss at Rivers Park in Chicopee.

South Hadley had won two straight and three of four.
