'Canes knock off Bombers
Chuck Hebb and Steffen Herter started two-out rallies in both the sixth and eighth innings as the Amherst Regional baseball team kept its league title hopes alive with a 3-2 win Monday in eight innings in Westfield.
Hebb got things going in the eighth inning with a single, followed by a single by Herter. Dean Bonneau then walked to load the bases and Evan Hazelett's grounder brought home Hebb for the go-ahead run.
Amherst (11-6, 6-2 Valley) overcame a two-run deficit in the sixth when Hebb had a leadoff single and Herter followed with an RBI-double. Herter later scored the equalizer on a wild pitch.
Kevin Ziomek earned the win in relief. The junior pitched the final 1-2/3 innings, striking out two and walking one.
Derek Osborne started the game for the Hurricanes. The junior allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits and one walk while striking out one.
The Bombers fell to 14-4 overall (6-2 Valley League) and into a second-place tie in the league with the Hurricanes behind Cathedral (15-2, 7-1).
Amherst plays the Panthers in Springfield at 5 p.m. Friday.
Belchertown 14, Northampton 5 - The wind was blowing out and so were the baseballs as the Orioles (11-6, 3-3 Suburban) smashed three home runs in the win at home Monday.
Dan Hodgen (3-for-4) hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning and finished with four RBIs for Belchertown, Cory Menard (3-for-3) hit a solo homer, his fifth of the season, in the second inning, and Alex Guyer (2-for-3) added a solo shot in the fifth.
Bryan Eldridge (2-for-4) had two doubles and two RBIs, and Brian Johnson had two hits and two RBIs for the Orioles.
Kevin Dupras struck out eight over seven innings to earn the win for Belchertown. Dupras walked four, including three in the first when the Blue Devils took a 4-0 lead.
Casey Savino had a two-run single and Max Talbot had an RBI single in the first for Northampton (8-9, 2-4), and Luke LaPlante broke a 4-4 tie with a solo homer in the fourth.
Jimmy Laizer finished with two hits for the Blue Devils who must win two of their remaining three games to qualify for the postseason.
Greenfield 3, Hopkins Academy 0 - Andy Wroblewski outpitched Burke Bonneville and kept the host Green Wave in the hunt for the Hampshire League title.
Wroblewski struck out 13 and allowed three hits.
Greenfield (13-4, 10-4) kept pace with Mohawk (12-5, 10-4), which beat Easthampton. Pioneer Regional (12-4, 9-4) is alive as well but did not play Monday.
Bonneville struck out 10 and allowed seven hits for the Golden Hawks (12-5, 9-5).
Kyle Mish, Zach Hunter and Paul Wanczyk each had a hit for Hopkins.
Frontier Regional 16, Athol 2 - Robbie Sjodahl struck out eight, walked two and scattered three hits as the Red Hawks kept their playoff hopes alive with the win on the road.
Frontier (8-10, 6-9 Hampshire), which has not missed the postseason since 1995, needs to win its final two games to keep that streak alive.
Chris Williams (3-for-3) had three RBIs and scored twice to power the Red Hawks' offense.
Anthony Laurenitis (2-for-4) had two RBIs and two runs, and Ashton Lutenegger (2-for-5) had two RBIs, two runs and four stolen bases for the Red Hawks.
Mohawk Trail 8, Easthampton 1 - Tim Cunningham had two hits and one RBI but the Eagles (4-14, 2-13 Hampshire) fell on the road to the Warriors (12-5, 10-4).
Sci-Tech 14, Hampshire Regional 3 - The Cybercats scored seven times in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach in Westhampton.
Mike Konarski had three hits and an RBI, and Matt Dziok had two hits and scored a run for Hampshire (4-12, 3-10 Bi-County).
McCann Tech 6, Smith Academy 0 - Chris LaRose had three of the six hits for the Falcons (6-12, 2-9 Tri-County North) in the loss in North Adams.
Matt Sulda, Chris Sulda and Kory LaBarge each added singles for Smith.
Chris Sulda pitched five innings, allowing five runs on three walks and eight hits while striking out three.
South Hadley 7, Ludlow 6 - The Tigers (5-11, 2-4 Suburban) scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth and held off the Lions (4-13, 2-4) for the win at home.
Jay Dizek had two hits, including a triple, while Jason Bourque added an RBI single for South Hadley.
Sean Sullivan went the distance for the Tigers, allowing four hits and overcoming four errors while striking out three.
Smith Vocational 3, Putnam 2 - Andy Blair's two-run double in the fifth inning gave the Vikings (5-12) the lead for good at Arcanum Field.
Blair capped a two-out rally, which began when Mike Walkowicz singled and Shawn Warren reached on an error.
Walkowicz allowed no earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six to improve to 4-3 on the year.
Southwick 5, Holyoke Catholic 2 - The Gaels (5-13, 4-10 Bi-County) scored two runs on two hits in the first inning but that was all they could manage off freshman lefty Tom Mahoney who had six strikeouts.
Mahoney walked two in the first before Ian Daigle's RBI-single scored Michael Prattico and Ryan Ferriter's RBI-single plated Jake Hagelstein.
The Rams (5-10, 5-9) scored three runs in the fifth to pull away.
