Ziomek dazzles for Hurricanes

Kevin Ziomek pitched Amherst Regional back into the Valley League picture with a one-hitter as the Hurricanes won 4-0 to hand Westfield its first league loss with a setback at Community Field.

Ziomek struck out nine, walked four and hit one batter in seven innings to improve to 5-1.

Amherst (9-5) moved into a tie with Cathedral (12-2) and Westfield (12-3) for first place at 4-1 in the league. All three teams have one game remaining against each other. Westfield, the defending sectional champ, handed Cathedral its lone loss. Cathedral beat Amherst Friday.

"Every year this is a competitive league," Amherst coach Greg Vouros said. "Everyone is even now. We have shot. We'll see how everything plays out."

Kevin Ross broke up Ziomek's no-hit bid with a single to center in the fifth.

Dean Bonneau (double, stolen base), Matt Musante (hit), Derek Osborne (hit, walk) and Chuck Hebb (walk) each scored a run for Amherst.

Gateway Regional 15, Renaissance 0 - There was no drama for the Gators (10-5) Tuesday, as they won in Springfield to clinch their first postseason berth since 2004.

Steven Ellershaw and Tommy Ray combined for five innings of one-hit ball for Gateway. Ellershaw allowed no hits in four frames, striking out four and walking three. Ray allowed a single in the fifth and had a strikeout in his scoreless inning.

Ray Bressette went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs for the Gators, and Mike Miller (two runs, two RBIs) and Corey Whitaker (triple, run, two RBIs) each had two hits, while Jeremy Tanguay contributed a two-run single.

Ware 6, Holyoke Catholic 2 - The Gaels (5-10, 4-7 Bi-County) need to win the rest of their games to qualify for the postseason following the loss in Holyoke.

Holyoke Catholic plays the Indians (12-1, 9-1) again at 4 p.m. today in Ware.

Jake Hagelstein, Ian Daigle and D.J. Tucker (RBI, run) each had two hits, and Michael Prattico had one RBI for the Gaels.

Steve Siller hit a two-out, 0-2 pitch for a solo home run in the first inning for the Indians.

Tyler Goodfield ripped a one-out, 2-2 knuckleball from Mike Hagelstein for a grand slam in the fourth which gave Ware a 5-0 lead.

Pioneer Regional 6, Easthampton 5 - The Eagles (4-11, 2-10 Hampshire) were eliminated from postseason contention while the Panthers (10-4, 7-4) qualified with the win in Northfield.

Tim Cunningham had two hits, including a double, while Peter Gilbert had a hit and two RBIs for Easthampton.
