Ziomek dazzles for 'Canes
Kevin Ziomek pitched Amherst Regional back into the Valley League picture with a one-hitter as the Hurricanes won 4-0 to hand Westfield its first league loss with a setback at Community Field.
Ziomek struck out nine, walked four and hit one batter in seven innings to improve to 5-1.
Amherst (9-5) moved into a tie with Cathedral (12-2) and Westfield (12-3) for first place at 4-1 in the league. All three teams have one game remaining against each other. Westfield, the defending sectional champ, handed Cathedral its lone loss. Cathedral beat Amherst Friday.
"Every year this is a competitive league," Amherst coach Greg Vouros said. "Everyone is even now. We have shot. We'll see how everything plays out."
Kevin Ross broke up Ziomek's no-hit bid with a single to center in the fifth.
Dean Bonneau (double, stolen base), Matt Musante (hit), Derek Osborne (hit, walk) and Chuck Hebb (walk) each scored a run for Amherst.
Gateway Regional 15, Renaissance 0 - There was no drama for the Gators (10-5) Tuesday, as they won in Springfield to clinch their first postseason berth since 2004.
Steven Ellershaw and Tommy Ray combined for five innings of one-hit ball for Gateway. Ellershaw allowed no hits in four frames, striking out four and walking three. Ray allowed a single in the fifth and had a strikeout in his scoreless inning.
Ray Bressette went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs for the Gators, and Mike Miller (two runs, two RBIs) and Corey Whitaker (triple, run, two RBIs) each had two hits, while Jeremy Tanguay contributed a two-run single.
Ware 6, Holyoke Catholic 2 - The Gaels (5-10, 4-7 Bi-County) need to win the rest of their games to qualify for the postseason following the loss in Holyoke.
Holyoke Catholic plays the Indians (12-1, 9-1) again at 4 p.m. today in Ware.
Jake Hagelstein, Ian Daigle and D.J. Tucker (RBI, run) each had two hits, and Michael Prattico had one RBI for the Gaels.
Steve Siller hit a two-out, 0-2 pitch for a solo home run in the first inning for the Indians.
Tyler Goodfield ripped a one-out, 2-2 knuckleball from Mike Hagelstein for a grand slam in the fourth which gave Ware a 5-0 lead.
Pioneer Regional 6, Easthampton 5 - The Eagles (4-11, 2-10 Hampshire) were eliminated from postseason contention while the Panthers (10-4, 7-4) qualified with the win in Northfield.
Tim Cunningham had two hits, including a double, while Peter Gilbert had a hit and two RBIs for Easthampton.
Amherst Regional 10, Longmeadow 5 - Quianna Diaz-Patterson (two runs scored, one RBI), Emily Mangiaratti (three runs) and Ella Guimond (one run) each had three hits as the Hurricanes (15-0, 7-0 Valley Wheel) jumped out to a 10-0 lead and won in Longmeadow.
Emma Mendoker tossed four no-hit innings for Amherst, striking out 10 and walking one, before Emily Barstow took over on the mound. Barstow (two walks, no strikeouts) allowed five runs in the fifth, but settled down for scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh to earn the win in relief.
Heather Mears went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Simone Frank was 2-for-4 for the Hurricanes.
The teams play again today at Amherst at 4:30.
Monson 21, Smith Academy 1 (5 innings) - Allison Slysz (infield single) led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Brzozowski as the Falcons (2-8, 1-6 Bi-County East) lost in Hatfield.
Katie Raymond tossed a two-hitter as the Mustangs (10-4, 6-2) qualified for the postseason.
Easthampton 12, Gateway 6 - Alyssa Reardon pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to earn the win and went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to lead the Eagles.
Becca Lambert was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored for Easthampton (9-7, 2-1 Bi-County West).
Brooke Fairman started and pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowing six runs with six walks, and took the loss for the Gators (2-9, 0-4 Bi-County West). Rebecca D'Astous pitched 5-2/3 innings in relief with four strikeouts and two walks.
Chelsea Merritt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Gateway, while Regan Teixeira was 1-for-3 with two runs.
Holyoke Catholic 20, Sci-Tech 1 (5 innings) - Theresa West of Hadley and Bobbi Morey of Easthampton both went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead the Gaels in the win at home.
Ashley Butler pitched a one hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks in five innings to earn the win for Holyoke Catholic (4-6, 4-3 Bi-County East).
Kathleen Morgan of Belchertown went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for the Gaels.
Renaissance 21, Smith Vocational 6 (5 innings) - Rachel Tarka contributed to four of the Vikings' six runs in their loss to the Phoenix (3-5).
Tarka (two hits) had two RBIs in addition to two runs scored. Becca Bisbee and Kristen Dyer each had a hit and a run for Smith Vocational (4-9).
Bisbee took the loss in the circle.
Boys lacrosse
Longmeadow 18, Amherst Regional 4 - The shorthanded Hurricanes (5-9, 0-4 Valley Wheel) lost on the road as they missed five starters due to academics, sickness and injury.
All five are expected to return to the lineup.
Walker Nambu (assist), Tim Light, Alex Bloom and Jonah Bass each scored a goal for Amherst.
Kevin Kessler made 14 saves in goal for the Hurricanes.
Kyle Smith, who will play in college for the University of Massachusetts, had five goals and two assists for Longmeadow (7-2, 4-1).
West Springfield 9, Northampton 8 - Colin Szawlowski scored four goals and Mike Cronin had a hat trick, but it was not enough as the Blue Devils lost on the road.
Northampton (8-6, 3-1 Valley League) held a 5-4 lead at halftime, but West Springfield (7-5, 4-1) scored the game-winning goal with just over three minutes remaining.
Colin Sawula also scored for the Blue Devils.
Northampton goalkeeper Arron Mercier made 12 saves.
Minnechaug 6, South Hadley 4 - Goaltender Sean Mackey stopped 12 shots in net for the Tigers in the loss at home.
Alex Ortensi, Luke Dilisio, Ben Menard, and Brad Bell all scored for South Hadley (7-6, 1-4 Valley Wheel), Zak Guenther had two assists and Nick Mulveyhill assisted on one.
Girls lacrosse
Longmeadow 21, Northampton 3 - Erin King, Julia Sullivan, and Erin's sister Emily King each scored one goal as the Blue Devils lost at home.
Goaltender Jenny Long made one save in the first half for Northampton (7-4, 0-3 Valley Wheel), while Nicole Grevoir stopped four shots in the second.
