Rams qualify for tourney
Zack Cloutier tossed a two-hitter in his first varsity start as the Granby baseball team qualified for the postseason with a 3-0 victory over Commerce at home Thursday.
The sophomore struck out seven and walked one as Granby improved to 10-2.
"He's very versatile," Granby coach Jim Woods said. Cloutier plays third base and is also the backup catcher. "I figured he'd be able to handle it. Putting him in that situation wasn't a big deal."
Woods has gone with a rotation of Adam Majka (3-0), Kyle Pardee (3-1) and Tim Gifford (3-1) this season. Woods was looking for a fourth pitcher after reliever Jason Labrie was lost to a broken thumb last week.
Cloutier "has pitched in the summer and on junior varsity," Woods said. "He throws pretty well."
Kraig Burke and Jesse Cummings each went 2-for-3 for Granby.
Sean Sheridan scored in the first inning when Cloutier was caught in a rundown between first and second.
Adam Majka drew a bases loaded walk in the second to score Sheridan with the second run. Cummings then scored on a wild pitch with the final run.
Holyoke Catholic 12, Monson 1 - The Gaels pounded out 13 hits on their way to the win over the Mustangs (9-6, 5-5 Bi-County) in Holyoke.
Paul Novinski (2-for-3, three RBIs) opened the scoring with a two-run single in the second inning.
Mike Hagelstein earned the complete-game victory for Holyoke Catholic (5-8, 4-5). He struck out six, walked two and allowed one run on six hits. Hagelstein (1-for-2) helped his own cause with two runs scored.
Nate Thompson (two RBIs), D.J. Tucker (RBI, two runs) and Ian Daigle (RBI, run) each had two hits for the Gaels.
Chicopee 5, South Hadley 0 - Kyle Grumoli had the lone base hit for the Tigers (3-9) in their loss at home to Chicopee (11-3). Grumoli's hit broke up Rey Guzman's no-hit bid in the sixth inning. Guzman struck out nine and walked two.
Paul Ciolek allowed two runs in three innings for the loss.
