Dakin buys MSPCA shelter in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Two of the three adoption centers the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced it was closing because of the economy will remain open under new management.

The MSPCA announced Thursday its Springfield center that closed March 31 has been sold for $1.2 million to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society and will reopen Aug. 1. According to reports, the Dakin adoption center in Leverett will remain open; the Dakin clinic in Greenfield will close.

The organization's Martha's Vineyard facility, scheduled to close Friday, will be leased at no cost to the Animal Shelter of Martha's Vineyard, a government/private cooperation.

MSPCA president Carter Luke said the closures were necessary because the nonprofit lost $11.5 million from its endowment because of the recession.

The MSPCA is still trying to find a way to keep its Brockton center open.

I agree with your concerns,

I agree with your concerns, but I have a different perspective. Dakin could not have gotten to where they are today without the support of local donors who step up time and time again. This will likely be the case going forward at the Springfield facility as well.

I think Dakin may be the vehicle for starting this change, but the burden of ongoing financial support may ultimately fall on the local communities. If the communities within Hampden County choose to support Dakin it will be a success. If not, well...Who knows what will happen in the long run

It is our responsibility to support this organization to ensure they can continue to help our local communities.

excellent news, but

hope that Dakin could support this expansion financially. Of course, they will sell Greenfield, but there will be much pressure on the organization unless they have other sources of income aside from fund raising.
