Volleyball: Orioles on the return
With a veteran group of juniors and a host of newcomers, the Belchertown boys volleyball team looks to rebound from a down year and return to the playoffs.
After making the Western Massachusetts Division 1 final in 2007, the Orioles lost six starters to graduation and finished with an 8-12 record last season.
Belchertown lost seven players from its 2008 squad, leaving juniors Tyler Keefe, T.J. Leblanc, and Doug Rogers as the returning starters.
Orioles coach John Skorupski said that Keefe could have a breakout year this season, and that Leblanc will show improvement over last year.
Skorupski believes the turnover has been positive because the new players have brought a strong work ethic.
"I think we have a very motivated team this year," Skorupski said. "The guys this year are easy to work with, they're cooperative, and are trying real hard in practice."
Two new players in particular, Gavin Lofland and James Tan, are expected to be key contributors this season.
Skorupski emphasized that Belchertown's success will depend on teamwork, not individual performances.
"If we win anything this year it will be because the team plays well - not because any one player plays well," Skorupski said.
