Young leads Minutewomen

Senior Sakera Young scored a career-high 22 points as the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team cruised past Rhode Island 70-53 at the Ryan Center in Kingston.

Young had seven points in a 10-0 run by the Minutewomen (9-13, 2-5 Atlantic 10) early in the second half to stretch a one-point lead to 11. UMass finished the game on a 12-3 run to complete the win.

Young shot 8-for-11 from the field and 6-for-11 from the free-throw line.

The entire Minutewoman team shot 50.9 percent (27-for-53) from the field.

Teya Wright added 16 points and nine rebounds for UMass, and Stefanie Gerardot scored 12 points.

Crystal Bellinger led the Rams (9-13, 2-5 Atlantic 10) with 15 points.

The Minutewomen play at Dayton at 2 p.m. Saturday.
