First half sinks Minutewomen
The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team could not overcome a 15-point halftime deficit and lost 82-68 at Richmond Saturday afternoon.
The Minutewomen (8-12, 1-4 Atlantic 10), who trailed 51-36 at halftime, shot 54.5 percent from the field. However, they had 24 turnovers to 11 for the Spiders (16-4, 4-1), who outscored UMass 31-9 off the giveaways.
The Minutewomen led 18-10 with 12 minutes, 10 seconds to play in the first half, but Richmond went on a 33-10 run in the final eight minutes before the break.
UMass was led by Sakera Young, who scored a career-high 16 points and added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Kristina Danella contributed 15 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Minutewomen.
UMass is off for a week until it hosts Saint Louis at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mullins Center.
