Public can comment Tuesday on proposed Easthampton grocery
EASTHAMPTON - The Planning Board will host its second public hearing Tuesday on the proposal from Stop & Shop Supermarkets Inc. to build a store on Northampton Street.
Board members, who will convene at the White Brook Middle School auditorium at 6 p.m., will again invite public comment on the special permit application, which would bring a 37,500-square-foot store, an eight-pump fueling station and 16,900 square feet of additional retail space.
Developers from the company are proposing the installation of a traffic signal at Mountainview Street as well as widening Northampton Street to accommodate dedicated turning lanes and the installation of sidewalks on the front of the property line.
Residents crowded into the White Brook auditorium late last month, with many expressing frustration over the proposal. They predicted traffic congestion and a spoiled view of the Mount Tom Range. Some made impassioned pleas to the Planning Board to consider if the project is "good for the city."
Planning Board Chairman Jason Duda asked company representatives at the end of the hearing last month to get "a little more creative" with the green space shown on their plans and asked that the company consider bicycle lanes.
Duda also requested that the company bring more computer-generated representations of the proposal to Tuesday's hearing.
City Planner Stuart Beckley said today he does not expect the board to vote on the project Tuesday. Beckley predicted there will be more meetings on the proposal.
Stop & Shop representatives pitched their project in three meetings last month - to an invited group of abutters, to the city's Economic and Industrial Development Corporation and to the Planning Board.
