Minutemen win Atlantic 10 cross country championship

The University of Massachusetts men's cross country team won its second-ever Atlantic 10 championship by one point over Duquesne Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.

The Minutemen, who finished with 75 points, were led by Jonathan Pierce who placed ninth in 24 minutes, 22.8 seconds. He and Nils Fischer (11th in 24:32) were named to the all-conference team.

UMass junior Andrew Mulvaney of South Hadley finished 18th in 24:48.9.

Minuteman coach Ken O'Brien was named the A-10 coach of the year for the second time in his career.

UMass won its other league title in 1995.

Women's cross country

The University of Massachusetts finished seventh with 186 points at the Atlantic 10 championships Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.

Richmond won with 48 points.

Minutewomen Shiyi Zan (eighth 18:18.3) and Karen Roa (15th in 18:43.7) were named to the all-conference team.

Men's soccer

UMass 2, Fordham 1 - The Minutemen (7-6-3, 5-1-1 Atlantic 10) extended their unbeaten streak to six games with the win Sunday in the Bronx, N.Y.

UMass scored first on an own goal at 41 minutes, 53 seconds. Sam DeNormandie then got his first career goal for the Minutemen on a header six minutes into the second half.

UMass goalkeeper Zack Simmons made six saves.

The Minutemen, who are tied with Temple for second in the A-10, conclude the regular season with games at Rudd Field against Saint Louis at 2:30 p.m. Friday and Charlotte at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Women's soccer

Charlotte 1, UMass 0 - Vanessa Lima of Amherst was one of five seniors honored by the Minutewomen before Sunday's loss at Rudd Field.

Goalkeeper Lauren Luckey made four saves for UMass which ends its season at 6-9-3 overall and 3-7-1 in the Atlantic 10.

Field hockey

Providence 3, UMass 2 (OT) - Senior midfielder Erin Parker of South Deerfield assisted on the first goal for the Minutewomen (14-4) scored by Katelyn Orlando in the first half Saturday in Providence.

Parker leads the Atlantic 10 with eight assists this season.

UMass tied the game a second time when Makaela Potts scored on a penalty stroke at 47 minutes, 40 seconds.

Meghan Holden scored the winning goal for the Friars (12-8) with 8:22 played in overtime.

Minutewoman goaltender Alesha Widdall made 10 saves.

UMass is the top seed in the A-10 Tournament which begins Friday at Temple.

Men's swimming & diving

UMass 176, Stony Brook 123 - Freshman Jason Cook of Amherst won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events Saturday at Stony Brook, N.Y.
