Marie Proulx, centenarian, schoolteacher
HATFIELD - Marie A. Proulx, 100, formerly of Main Street, Hatfield, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon at the Hampshire Care in Leeds.
She was born in Hatfield on Jan. 19, 1908, the daughter of the late John L. and Delvina (Parent) Proulx. She was educated in Hatfield schools, graduating from Smith Academy in 1926 and from the former North Adams Normal School in 1928.
She began her teaching career with Hopkins Academy in Hadley, teaching eighth grade, then moving to Hatfield's Milk Man School, where she taught first and second grade, and then finally the Vernon Street School in Northampton, where she worked from 1945 until retiring in 1970. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Hatfield, a member of the Rosary Sodality, and a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association.
She was predeceased by her five siblings and 11 nieces and nephews.
She leaves two nephews, Donald Proulx and David Proulx, both of Largo, Fla.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet Wednesday morning at 9 at St. Joseph's Church, Hatfield, for a Liturgy of Christian Burial. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Northampton. Calling hours at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
